By: Daniela Hungerbauerman

Millions of people all over the world wake up each morning with a cup of coffee. Although it is known that coffee has properties that stimulate and can help a few people feel more alert, there are a few other health concerns that have come about from drinking too much coffee. Studies have shown some of the results of drinking coffee in moderate amounts may be advantageous to us. Yet, some of the other side effects of drinking large amounts of coffee might actually be harmful to your health. This article will look at a few of the other health effects that drinking coffee might have.

Too much coffee has been linked to infertility and problems with birth. Women who admitted to drinking coffee everyday had higher incidences of still birth deliveries. Your chances of miscarriages can also be significantly higher if you drink two or more cups per day. Mothers who drink coffee during pregnancy can expect lower than average birthweights. Changing to a decaff coffee may not do any good because of the chemicals used to remove the caffeine.

One disease that is drastically reduced in risk with coffee is cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis can be a symptom or leading cause of chronic liver disease whereby the normally liver tissue begins to be replaced by nodules etc. These nodules typically stop liver functionality completely over time. Coffee has an anti-fibrotic quality that some people can benefit from. Caffeine has also proved to lower the risk of liver cancer.

If you want to lose weight you might want to consider cutting out caffeine and yes, that morning cup of coffee. Caffeine is proven to increase the risk of long term weight gain. If you are like most you will probably seem like your short term weight goals are being met with that extra cup of coffee in the morning. However, this is because coffee has a mild diuretic effect, so you're actually losing fluid, not fat. Caffeine increases hormones that increase your risk for hypoglycemia otherwisse known as low blood sugar levels. You will likely feel more hungry sooner than you should as a result of this hormone.

You also aren't helping things by adding extra sugar to your coffee. There are benefits to enjoy by drinking coffee in moderation. Drinking too much coffee, though, can have a negative impact on your overall health. If you really are interested in the potential health benefits of coffee, it's important to limit yourself to cups a day.
